The Twenty-Seventh Psalm

1. Of David
יְיָ ׀ אוֹרִי וְיִשְׁעִי
Adonai ori v'yish'i
The Lord is my light and my salvation;
מִמִּי אִירָא
mimmi ira
Whom should I fear?
יְיָ מָעוֹז־חַיַּי
Adonai maoz-ḥayyai,
The Lord is the strength of my life,
מִמִּי אֶפְחָד׃
mimmi efḥad.
whom should I fear?
ב בִּקְרֹב עָלַי ׀ מְרֵעִים
Bikrov alai m'rei'im
2. When evil men assail me
לֶאֱכֹל אֶת־בְּשָׂרִי
le'eḥol et-b'sari
to devour my flesh—
צָרַי וְאֹיבַי לִי
tsarai v'oivai li
it is they, my foes and enemies,
הֵמָּה כָשְׁלוּ וְנָפָלוּ׃
heima ḥashlu v'nafalu.
who stumble and fall.
ג אִם־תַּחֲנֶה עָלַי ׀ מַַחֲנֶה
Im taḥaneh alai maḥaneh
3. Though an army besiege me,
לֹא־יִירָא לִבִּי
lo yira libi
my heart shall not fear;
אִם־תָּקוּם עָלַי מִלְחָמָה
im takum alai mil'ḥamah
Though war should beset me,
בְּזֹאת אֲנִי בוֹטֵחַ׃
b'zot ani voteiaḥ.
still I will be confident.
ד אַחַת ׀ שָׁאַלְתִּי מֵאֵת־יְיָ
Aḥat sha'alti mei'eit-Adonai
4. One thing I ask of the Lord,
אוֹתָהּ׃אֲבַקֵּשׁ
otah avakeish
that I will seek after:
שִׁבְתִּי בְּבֵית־יְיָ
shiv'ti b'veit-Adonai
to live in the house of the Lord
כׇּל־יְמֵי חַיַּי
kol y'mei ḥayyai
all the days of my life;
לַחֲזוֹת בְּנֹעַם־יְיָ
laḥazot b'no'am-Adonai
to behold the beauty of the Lord,
וּלְבַקֵּר בְּהֵיכָלוֹ׃
ul'vakeir b'heiḥalo.
to frequent his temple.
ה כִּי יִצְפְּנֵנִי ׀ בְּסֻכֹּה
Ki yitzp'neini b'sukoh
5. He will shelter me in his pavilion
בְּיוֹם רָעָה
b'yom ra'ah
on an evil day,
יַסְתִּרֵנִי בְּסֵתֶר אָהֳלוֹ
yastireini b'seiter ahalo
protect me in His tent,
בְּצוּר יְרוֹמְמֵנִי׃
b'tzur y'rom'meini.
raise me high upon a rock.
ו וְעַתָּה יָרוּם רֹאשִׁי
V'atah yarum roshi
6. Now shall my head be lifted
עַל אֹיבַי סְבִיבוֹתַי
al oivai s'vivotai
above my enemies round about me;
וְאֶזְבְּחָה בְאָהֳלוֹ זִבְחֵי תְרוּעָה
v'ezb'ḥah v'ahalu zivḥei t'ruah
I sacrifice in His tent with shouts of joy,
אָשִׁירָה וַאֲזַמְּרָה לַיְיָ׃
ashirah va'azamm'rah la'Adonai.
I will sing and chant a hymn to the Lord.
ז שְׁמַע־יְיָ קוֹלִי אֶקְרָא
Sh'ma-Adonai koli ekra
7. Hear, O Lord, when I cry aloud
וְחָנֵּנִי וַעֲנֵנִי׃
v'ḥanneini va'aneini.
have mercy on me and answer me.
ח לְךָ ׀ אָמַר לִבִּי
L'ḥa amar libi
8. In Your behalf my heart says:
בַּקְּשׁוּ פָנָי
bakshu fanai
"Seek my face!"
אֶת־פָּנֶיךָ יְיָ אֲבַקֵּשׁ׃
et-paneiḥa Adonai avakeish.
Your face, O Lord, I seek.
ט אַל־תַּסְתֵּר פָּנֶיךָ ׀ מִמֶּנִּי
Al-tasteir paneiḥa mimmenni
9. Do not hide your face from me;
אַל־תַּט־בְּאַף עַבְדֶּךָ עֶזְרָתִי הָיִיתָ׃
al-tat-b'af av'deḥa ezrati hayita
Do not thrust aside your servant in anger; You have ever been my help.
אַל־תִּטְּשֵׁנִי וְאַל־תַּעַזְבֵנִי
al-titsheini v'al-ta'azveini.
Do not forsake me, do not abandon me.
אֱלֹהֵי יִשְׁעִי׃
Elohei yish'i.
O God of my salvation.
י כִּי־אָבִי וְאִמִּי עֲזָבוּנִי
Ki-avi v'immi azavuni
10. When my father and my mother forsake me,
וַיְיָ יַאַסְפֵנִי׃
vaAdonai ya'asfeini.
the Lord will take me in.
יא הוֹרֵנִי יְיָ דַּרְכֶּךָ׃
Horeini Adonai darkeḥa
11. Teach me your way, O Lord
וּנְחֵנִי בְּאֹרַח מִישׁוֹר
unḥeini b'oraḥ mishor
and lead me on a level path
לְמַעַן שׁוֹרְרָי׃
l'ma'an shor'rai.
because of my watchful foes.
יב אַל־תִּתְּנֵנִי בְּנֶפֶשׁ צָרָי
Al-titneini b'nefesh tsarai
12. Do not subject me to the will of my foes,
כִּי קָמוּ־בִי
ki kamu-vi
for false witnesses and unjust accusers
עֵדֵי־שֶׁקֶר וִיפֵחַ חָמָס׃
eidei-sheker vifeiaḥ ḥamas.
have risen up against me.
יג לוּלֵא הֶאֱמַנְתִּי
Lulei he'emanti
13. Unless I had the assurance
לִרְאוֹת בְּטוּב־יְיָ׃
lir'ot b'tuv-Adonai
that I would enjoy the goodness of the Lord
בְּאֶרֶץ חַיִּים׃
b'erets ḥayyim.
in the land of the living...
יד קַוֵּה אֶל־יְיָ׃
Kavvei el-Adonai
14. Look to the Lord;
חֲזַק וְיַאֲמֵץ לִבֶּךָ׃
ḥazak v'ya'ameits libeḥa
be strong and of good courage!
וְקַוֵּה אֶל־יְיָ׃
v'kavveh el-Adonai!
O look to the Lor
